Makar Sankranti is celebrated everywhere in India . It is celebrated in on large scale . Makar Sankranti generally falls in between 14 th January  . But do you know the reason behind Makar Sankranti ? Let us know here...

Makar Sankranti is the day when sun changes its path . It goes from 'Dakshin' (South) to 'Uttar' (North) that is why in some regions it is called 'Uttarayan' . India is located above the equator means in the Northern Hemisphere . As before Makar Snakranti Sun remains in the South it remains far from India . That is why shorter days and longer nights take place and also the winter is also there . From the day of Makar Sankranti Sun starts it journey to the north and the days start becoming longer and the nights start becoming shorter . In India is believed that the summer starts coming from Makar Snakranti . Scientifically the Sun never changes its position because of the revolution of the earth the Sun comes to the north pole .

As the days would become longer and the night would become shorter there will be more rays emitted by sun and there will be less darkness in the night . So it is believed that due to Makar Sankranti darkness shifts to enlightment . This gives us the positivity as due to longer days there will be more work and more happiness . So all around India it is celebrated in different ways by praising and worshiping Sun or 'Suryadebta' . It is also believed that Lord Surya went to visit his son Shani on that day as Lord Shani is also known as Makar Rashi this day is called Makar Sankranti . On Makar Sankranti Bhisma Pitamaha from Mahabharat sacrificed his body . Makar Sankranti is also a important festival for the farmers .

In Punjab and Haryana it is known as Lohri and is celebrated on 13th January . On this day they celebrate it by dancing around bonfire and eat 'makki ki roti' and 'sarson ka saag ' . In Uttar Pradesh it is celebrated as a festival of donation . In Allahabad (Prayagraj)' Magh mela ' starts in Ganga , Yamuna , Saraswati , Tribeni Sangam for nearly one month . From 14th December to 14th January it is known as 'Khar maas' (month) . They do good work like donations , worshiping god and showing humanity . In Bihar it is known as Khichdi . In South states it is celebrated as Pongal also .
